Where to buy food: Costco, Ralphs, Trader Joe’s & halal markets

A guide to grocery shopping around Irvine — warehouse clubs, everyday supermarkets, and halal & Central Asian markets.

Grocery shopping in the US mixes a few store types you may not have back home: membership warehouse clubs, big everyday supermarkets, and specialty/discount grocers. Here is where people in Irvine actually shop.

The big three

  • Costco — a membership warehouse club. You pay a yearly membership fee to shop (check costco.com for current tiers), and in exchange get bulk sizes at low unit prices, a pharmacy, an optical center, and famously cheap gas at the attached station. Best for stocking up monthly rather than a quick weekday trip.
  • Ralphs — Southern California’s main everyday supermarket chain (owned by Kroger). Free to join; the Ralphs rewards card (via their app) unlocks weekly digital coupons and fuel points. This is the closest equivalent to a normal neighborhood supermarket back home — produce, deli, bakery, pharmacy.
  • Trader Joe’s — a smaller, quirky, budget-friendly grocer known for unique private-label products, frozen food, and snacks. No loyalty card, no bulk sizes, and stores are compact — great for a quick weekly run, not a full stock-up.

Halal & Central Asian groceries

  • Wholesome Choice — a large international market with a halal butcher counter and a strong selection of Central Asian and Middle Eastern products (good place to find familiar staples).
  • Super Irvine and Mission Ranch Market — Mediterranean/Middle Eastern grocers with halal meat and fresh produce.

Good to know

  • Most of these stores accept CalFresh/EBT for eligible food items — see Medi-Cal & CalFresh if you may qualify.
  • Use each chain’s app to find the nearest branch and current hours — Irvine has multiple locations of Ralphs and Trader Joe’s, and Costco has warehouses in and around the city.
  • For the wider Kazakh and Central Asian community — including where people gather and shop together — see the community directory.
