Health insurance in Orange County
Why insurance is essential, plus Medi-Cal via CalOptima and Covered California.
Updated: Jun 26, 2026
US healthcare is expensive and there is no universal free system. A single emergency-room visit can cost thousands of dollars without insurance. Getting covered is one of the most important things you do.
How coverage usually works
You pay (or your employer pays) a monthly premium. When you get care you may also pay a deductible, copay, or coinsurance. In return, insurance covers a large share of big medical costs.
Ways to get insured in Orange County
- Through an employer. Many full-time jobs offer health plans — often the cheapest option. Ask HR.
- Medi-Cal via CalOptima. Free or low-cost coverage for people with low income. In Orange County, Medi-Cal is run by CalOptima Health. Apply through BenefitsCal or call the OC Social Services Agency at 1-800-281-9799. Eligibility depends on income and immigration status, and some rules are changing in 2026 — check current details.
- Covered California. California’s marketplace, where you buy a plan yourself; many people qualify for subsidies. There are limited enrollment windows, but a recent move can open a special one.
| Option | Who it’s for | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Employer plan | Anyone whose job offers coverage | Usually the cheapest — the employer pays part |
| Medi-Cal (via CalOptima) | Lower-income households | Free or very low cost |
| Covered California | No employer plan, income above Medi-Cal limits | Monthly premium; subsidies can lower it a lot |
Getting care
- Primary care doctor — your first stop for routine issues; register with one.
- Urgent care — for non-life-threatening problems (cuts, fevers) when your doctor is unavailable; cheaper and faster than the ER. There are several urgent-care clinics around Irvine.
- Emergency room (ER) — for serious, life-threatening emergencies. Call 911 if in doubt.
Adjusting is hard, too
Moving countries is stressful, and that is normal. If you are struggling, 988 offers free, confidential support 24/7, and many areas have Russian-speaking counselors.
