Getting around Irvine: cars, insurance & transit
Why you’ll likely need a car, how to buy and insure one, and public-transit options.
Updated: Jun 26, 2026
Irvine is car-centric — most residents drive, and many jobs and stores are hard to reach without a car. Public transit exists but is limited.
Do you need a car?
For most families, yes. If you can’t drive yet, you can manage at first with transit, ride-hailing (Uber/Lyft), and the free city shuttle — but plan to get a driver’s license and a car before long.
Your options at a glance
| Option | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Own car | $$$ — gas, insurance, registration | Everyday life — most of Irvine is built around driving |
| OCTA bus | $ — check current fares | Commutes along major corridors |
| Metrolink train (Irvine Station) | $$ — priced by distance | Trips toward LA and across the county |
| Irvine CONNECT shuttle | Free | Neighborhoods, schools, parks & Irvine Station |
| Uber / Lyft | $$ per trip | Getting around before you buy a car |
Buying a used car
- Set a budget including insurance, registration, and fuel — not just the sticker price.
- Search dealerships and private sellers (Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, CarMax).
- Check the vehicle history (e.g. a Carfax report) and have a mechanic inspect it.
- Transfer the title and register the car with the DMV within 10 days.
Car insurance (required by law)
California law requires car insurance to drive. Before you drive:
- Get at least a liability auto policy.
- Compare quotes from several insurers (Geico, Progressive, State Farm, etc.) — prices vary a lot.
- Keep proof of insurance in the car; you’ll need it to register and at the DMV driving test.
Public transit & shuttles
- Irvine Station — the busiest Metrolink commuter-rail station in Orange County, with connections toward LA; Amtrak stops here too.
- OCTA buses — local and express routes across the county.
- Irvine CONNECT — a free city shuttle linking neighborhoods, schools, parks, and Irvine Station, roughly every 20 minutes.
