Driver’s license & California ID

How to get a California driver’s license or ID near Irvine — including Russian-language study help.

Irvine is built around cars, so most newcomers want a California driver’s license early. If you won’t drive, get a California ID card instead — you’ll still need photo ID for banking, leases, and daily life. Both are issued by the DMV.

Closest DMV offices

The Laguna Hills office closed in 2024, so the nearest field offices to Irvine are:

DMV — Costa Mesa: 650 W 19th St, Costa Mesa, CA 92627 (~6 mi) DMV — Santa Ana: 1330 E First St, Santa Ana, CA 92701 Phone: 1-800-777-0133 · Always book an appointment online — walk-ins wait for hours.

Quick steps

  1. Decide between a driver’s license or a state ID card.
  2. Gather documents: passport, your visa / I-94, your SSN, and proof of California residency (e.g. a lease or utility bill).
  3. Book an appointment online at Costa Mesa or Santa Ana.
  4. For a license: study, then pass the vision test and the written (knowledge) test.
  5. Pass the behind-the-wheel driving test (you’ll need a car that is registered and insured).
  6. Decide whether you want a REAL ID — required to board domestic US flights from May 2025.

Study in Russian 🇷🇺

You do not have to study only in English:

  • The California Driver Handbook can be downloaded in Russian from the DMV handbook page.
  • Take a free practice written test in Russian before your exam (link below).
  • For the behind-the-wheel test, watch the preparation video below so you know exactly what the examiner checks (mirrors, signals, lane changes, parking).

Good to know

  • Car insurance is required by law to drive in California — arrange it before your driving test. See health & car insurance and getting around.
  • New residents are expected to apply for a California license within 10 days of establishing residency.
