Visiting California: a 7–10 day trip plan

A realistic itinerary for a 7–10 day visit — Disneyland, Universal Studios, Hollywood, and a Sierra Nevada extension to Yosemite, Sequoia & Lake Tahoe.

If friends or family are coming to visit for 7–10 days, here is the honest version of what fits — Southern California’s big attractions are close together, but the famous national parks are a serious drive away. Plan around that rather than trying to see everything.

Two ways to spend the trip

  • Option A — Southern California only (4–5 days, no long drives). Disneyland, Universal Studios, and Hollywood are all within about an hour of Irvine. This is the relaxed, low-driving version.
  • Option B — Add the Sierra Nevada (7–10 days, serious driving). Extend the trip north to Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. Beautiful, but each leg is a half-day or more of driving — budget real time for it and don’t try to also fit in Lake Tahoe unless you have the full 10 days or are willing to fly part of the way.

Distances from Irvine

DestinationDistanceDrive timeSuggested time there
Disneyland (Anaheim)~15 mi20–50 min1–2 days
Universal Studios Hollywood~45 mi~1 hr (more in traffic)1 day
Hollywood Sign / Walk of Fame / Madame Tussauds~45 mi~1 hr (more in traffic)½–1 day
Yosemite National Park~394 mi~7 hr2+ days (stay overnight)
Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks~268 mi~5.5 hr1–2 days
Lake Tahoe~467 mi~8 hrBest as its own trip, or fly into Reno/Sacramento

Option A: Southern California highlights

  • Disneyland Park & Disney California Adventure — the original Disney park, right next door in Anaheim. Buy tickets online in advance; two days lets you do both parks without rushing.
  • Universal Studios Hollywood — working studio tours plus theme-park rides. About an hour away; the 101/5 corridor can be slow at peak times, so leave early.
  • Hollywood — the Hollywood Sign is best viewed (not hiked up close) from Griffith Observatory, which also has great city views. Pair it with the TCL Chinese Theatre, the Walk of Fame, and Madame Tussauds Hollywood (6933 Hollywood Blvd) — all within walking distance of each other.

Option B: Sierra Nevada extension

  • Yosemite National Park — waterfalls, granite cliffs (El Capitan, Half Dome), and giant sequoias in Mariposa Grove. It’s a long drive from Irvine, so plan to stay 1–2 nights near or in the park rather than doing it as a day trip.
  • Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks — home to the General Sherman Tree, the largest tree on Earth by volume. Can be combined with Yosemite (they’re a few hours apart) into one Sierra Nevada loop.
  • Lake Tahoe — stunning alpine lake on the Nevada border, but genuinely far from Irvine by car. If it’s a must-see, consider a short flight into Reno or Sacramento instead of driving the whole way.

Good to know

  • National park entry: some parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservation systems during peak season — check the official NPS park page shortly before your trip, since rules change year to year. An America the Beautiful annual pass can be worth it if visiting more than one park.
  • Book Disneyland and Universal Studios tickets online in advance — prices vary by date and lines move faster with a park reservation.
  • Rent a car for this trip even if you don’t normally drive in Irvine — none of this is realistic by public transit.
  • Mountain driving can involve snow and tire-chain requirements outside summer — check conditions before heading to Yosemite or Tahoe.
